Now create a second list, one that one that features working ranches with more than 50 miles of Q features one that features working ranches with more than 50 miles of Q working ranches with more than 50 miles of canyons rising from lush river bottoms. The final criterion is equally challenging: the presence of archaeological sites ranging from prehistoric to pioneer days, including Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo settlers. All of these diverse elements are present on Colorado's historic JE Canyon Ranch. Oh, and by the way, that herd of bighorn sheep? It's the largest private herd in the Centennial State. These are just a few of the reasons The Nature Conservancy saw fit to pay $21 million for the nearly 50,000-acre holding, which is watered by 9 miles of the Purgatoire River and 5 miles of Chacuaco Creek. The wide array of terrain and ecosystems supports more than 850 species of plants and animals, including elk, mule deer, and bear.
