10 The LandReport | FA L L 2 0 1 6 LANDREPORT.COM T here's an intriguing element to our Investing Issue. On the one hand, it would seem as though generating above-market returns would focus primarily on the land itself, correct? Yet as I paged through the first drafts from our Field Reporters, a corollary materialized. It became even more pronounced as copy and images emerged from layout and design. At the heart of each story was a passionate steward. Chris Soules was born to be a farmer; Paul Fireman, a visionary; and Tom Rowland, a forester. The Hagemans? They love land of all types: farmland, recreational tracts, conservation opportunities, and more. Study their stories. Read between the lines. You'll not notice any gimmicks or shortcuts. Instead, you'll recognize a sense of mission to make the most of that part of God's green earth that calls to each of these individuals. That's the definition of a calling, a vocation. In the picture above, you can see me pursuing mine. It was taken by my great friend, our Design Director, Don Weller, high in the hills on the Winecup Gamble Ranch. My thanks to each and every one of you for allowing me to pursue this vocation of mine.
