No doubt a good part of that can be attributed to TR himself. Whether it was riding a bull moose, going on safari, or spending three days on the trail in Yosemite with John Muir, the leader of the Rough Riders loved the great outdoors, and he assiduously cultivated this image. Calvin Coolidge did not cultivate such an image. Nor did the Vermonter seek to exploit his bully pulpit. One of my favorite chestnuts about the Sphinx of the Potomac was his decision not to seek reelection in 1928. It is the President of the United States joined by six fellow citizens in the Deep South in the late 1920s. A larger version can be found on page 65 in Corinne Garcia's wonderful write-up on America's oldest hunting club, Cabin Bluff Sporting Plantation. May I suggest you take a closer look?
