The diversity, beauty, history, and recreational components of Valhalla make it one of the most desirable plantations in the South. — ERICA KOHLER "Valhalla is a really special plantation," says Erica Kohler, director of sales at Jon Kohler & Associates. "It was founded in 1824 as one of the •rst agricultural plantations in Florida." Adds Jon: "It has some of the most fertile soil in the state of Florida, but by the 1880s and 1890s, the use had changed because of the high concentra- tion of quail." Past owners include Hector Braden, the 19th century land investor, sugar magnate, and cot- ton grower who founded Chemonie. David Ingalls, the •rst ace in US Navy history who later became a director of Pan Am World Airways and publisher of the Cincinnati Times-Star, laid claim to the land a century later. More recently, T. Wayne Davis, Jr. of the Winn-Dixie family owned the Leon County property with its lush piney woods. Valhalla's most recent owner – Arthur Cahoon, founder and CEO of the Jackson- ville-based Rock Creek Capital – envisioned a renewed Valhalla when he acquired it. In pursuit of the ambitious restoration program focused on quail, he sought out respected habitat expert Lee Stuckey to spearhead the project. Other improvements beyond the reju- venated environment include a main lodge, idyllically poised on the shores of Cody Lake, as well as a canopied road and landscaped gated main entrance. Additional structures added to the property range from a carriage house and kennels to a dog-trot style guest cabin and state- of-the-art post-and-beam horse stables with 11 stalls. A full slate of equestrian activities can be held in the riding ring, while six fenced pastures pro- vide ample pasturage for grazing and loa•ng. A newly constructed equipment barn houses the manager's ožces. In addition, the partially high- fenced plantation includes miles of road frontage and stained four-board fencing. For her husband, working with this turn- key property was rewarding from start to close. "When I was studying real estate more than 30 years ago at Florida State, the plantation had just sold for the •rst time in decades," Jon says. "¡e day I heard about the sale, I knew this was the type of property I wanted to specialize in."
