10 The LandReport | FA L L 2 0 1 5 LANDREPORT.COM A s you read Henry Chappell's profile of his friend and frequent collabora- tor Wyman Meinzer, you'll be tempted to pigeonhole this "Wild Man" as an incomparable outdoorsman. Let me counsel you otherwise. This summer, Henry and I (and our good friend Jack Harrison) drove out to the Big Empty to break bread with Wyman and Sylinda. One of my countless takeaways was the excruciating attention to detail that is one of Wyman's many hallmarks. Take, for instance, the image on this page. Most of us would describe a picture of ourselves seated on an ATV in a sentence or two. Here's Wyman's response to my email query: It is a 1987 Honda 4x4 350 cc that I still have today, 28 years of age, that runs fantastically well. The rifle is a Winchester Model 1892 in 32-20 caliber and was manufactured in 1926. The pistol is a Smith & Wesson .22 Rimfire. The traps are old Newhouse #14s, used in the old days to trap wolves and coyotes. I still use them if I decide to do any trapping during the late winter season. Some of these traps are far older than me, close to a century old. Inside the old Knox County Jail, there are volumes of Wyman's handwritten notes — on species, climate, habitat, artifacts, and much more. Meticulous journals may bring to mind the ways of old, which is why I must point out that our cover image is no Matthew Brady daguerreotype. Wyman shot it with his iPhone (which he had wedged into a Styrofoam coffee cup!). And would you care to guess how I first learned about the Antler Creek Dugout that Wyman and his brother, Rick, are standing in front of? His Facebook page. Don't be fooled by Wyman Meinzer's pretty pictures. Steel-Trap Mind E r i c O' K e e f e editor@landreport.com Editor's Note WYMAN MEINZER
