A
remarkable series of transactions closed
last year, including several seismic sales
that rewrote the record books. Whether it be
Farmland Partners' $55 million acquisition of
Wilder Farms in Illinois, a 295,000-acre timber
transaction in Arkansas and Texas, or Ted
Turner's sale of the Bluestem Ranch to the
Osage, the asset class known as land continues
to thrive in this country. But it was the sale of
Australia's S. Kidman & Co that proved to be
the showstopper, a mega-million-dollar deal
deemed so critical that it required approval of
the Australian Treasury. — The Editors
OPENING SPREAD: Much like the American West, the Australian
outback features a landscape that humbles those who dare to
challenge it. Success, however, is celebrated on an unimaginable
scale, which is how Sir Sidney Kidman came to be immortalized as
"The Cattle King." His descendants sold their family's pastoral
empire, which we honor as the 2016 Deal of the Year.
